Thhe Originals Does Hope Feed on Blood
The Vampire Diaries was one of the most successful shows that the CW network has ever had. The Vampire Diaries told the story of a girl who was thrust into a supernatural world. At one point in the show, the "original family" was introduced when they came to Mystic Falls to wreck some havoc on the residents. The original family, also known as the Mikaelsons, were the first vampires to ever be created. Their mother turned them into vampires a very, very long time ago because she was scared of losing another child.
The Mikaelsons were rough and wicked, yet fans seemed to love them and they even got their own spinoff! Thus The Originals was born, with the same producers and writers, for the most part.
The Originals delves deeper into the past of the Mikaelson family as well as introduces a whole new slew of problems for these very old vampires. Klaus seems to have gotten someone pregnant and now he must build a life for his daughter in a city that he once ruled, New Orleans. While trying to rebuild their lives in New Orleans they face old, and new, foes who are trying to bring their downfall once and for all. Throughout the series, there are quite a few errors and inconsistencies that the writers may, or may not, have realized along the way.
25/25 Cami Is On Vervain
One of the things that was a big deal when The Vampire Diaries and The Originals started was vervain. Vervain was a herb that was pretty hard to find but could be used against vampires. When ingested, this herb made it impossible for humans to be compelled and also made their blood toxic to vampires. One of the few characters on the show who is a human in every sense of the way is Cami. However, she is very much aware of the supernatural happenings in New Orleans and is not very shocked when she is confronted by Klaus and the other vampires.
She is the tender at the establishment where the vamps like to hang, so it only makes sense that she would put herself on vervain in order to protect herself.
At one point in the series she tells Klaus just this, that she is on vervain. However, she later uses her blood in order to feed Marcel. Even though Marcel has been taking vervain as a precaution, he should still show some sort of negative effects when he ingests it. Katherine from The Vampire Diaries was taking vervain for over a century, yet when she ingested it she was still burned.
24/25 The Fight Scenes
The Originals revolves around the most powerful vampires in the world. So as you can imagine, there are a ton of fight scenes every single episode. There is a very big power struggle between Marcel and Klaus. Klaus feels that he should be in charge of the city because he is the stronger vampire and helped to build it up to what it is today decades and decades ago.
However, Marcel took over where Klaus left off and has been making sure that everything runs smoothly since then.
He feels like the supernatural creatures respond best to him because he has a very specific system in place to keep everyone in check. But Klaus and his family are the original family so even a whole army of vamps shouldn't really be a problem for them, especially when they don't really have any weapons to end you. So why are Marcel and his young vamps always such a problem for the Mikaelsons? The power struggle doesn't really make sense at all because the originals always talk about how they are more powerful then any vampire combined, and once Klaus broke his curse there was literally no weapon in the world that could truly end him.
23/25 Klaus' Two Sets Of Fangs
The whole reason that Klaus was introduced into The Vampire Diaries was because he needed Elena in order to break his curse. He was born with the werewolf gene and when his mother turned him and his siblings into vampires she made sure that he would never be able to activate his vampire side. Klaus was not happy about this and spent a very, very long time trying to figure out a way to break this curse. In order to break the curse, Klaus needed a very specific list of ingredients and it took him quite a long time to find everything that he needed.
However, Klaus wanted to embrace his werewolf side so bad because he felt that it would finally make him feel like he belongs somewhere since he has always felt like an outcast. He never actually achieved this until a couple of years before he returned to New Orleans. So when there are flashbacks in the show to centuries and centuries before, it doesn't make sense that he would have two sets of fangs at that point. He was only technically a vampire, so he would not have his werewolf fangs until he broke his curse in Mystic Falls in the 2000s. This was only super noticeable if you paid close attention and remembered details, but nonetheless, it was an inconsistency that many fans picked up on!
22/25 Esther's Necklace
Rebekah's necklace saw a couple of different owners over the course of the series. Stefan gave it to Elena as a gift when they first started dating before he knew who's it actually was. He had filled it with vervain so that Damon would not be able to compel her into doing anything that she didn't want to. However, this necklace actually belonged to the original witch way back when. Rebekah inherited it from her mother and supposedly never took it off. She loved it and felt that it was her only connection to her but in all of the flashbacks it is no where to be seen.
She is seen wearing a couple of different necklaces in the flashbacks but she never wears Esther's necklace.
It is also never really discussed how it landed in the hands of Katherine Pierce. Katherine knew the originals way back when they were trying to use her in their sacrifice and break Klaus' curse. She ran and spent countless decades on the run from them as a result. When she settled in Mystic Falls the necklace landed in Stefan's hands and the rest is history. This necklace ended up being the key to a couple of different things.
21/25 New Orleans Witches Lose Their Magic If They Leave The Quarter
The witches play a much larger role in The Originals then in The Vampire Diaries. The New Orleans witches are supposed to be some of the most powerful witches. They derive most of their powers from the ancestors and the roots that they have in the city. Sophie Devereaux is one of the first New Orleans witches to be introduced in the series. She ends up teaming with the Original family in an attempt to get her niece Monique back.
She offers them a lot if insight into the New Orleans witches and tells them that if the witches leave New Orleans, then their ties to the ancestors and city are cut.
As a result of leaving they will no longer have access to their powers and be able to perform magic. However this theory is proven wrong when Finn leaves the city and is still able to perform magic. Esther brought back both of her children, Finn and Kol, into the bodies of New Orleans witches. As a result, they had the powers and connections that all of the other witches did. It is not known if Finn was able to still practice magic because he was still channeling Esther.
20/25 All Of The Mikaelsons Were Witches
One of the things that is most confusing about the show is the origin of the Mikaelson family. Their mother, Esther, was clearly a witch as she was able to create a spell that made all of her children immortal. Kol was very happy when his mother brought him back to life in the body of a witch because he loved to perform magic. At one point in the show, Kol says that all of his siblings were witches when they were born. They lost their magical abilities when their mother decided to turn them into vampires, but Kol always missed it.
However, this statement is contradicted a number of times because whenever Klaus or Elijah refer to their previous lives, they call themselves, as well as their siblings, humans. However, this one may have a loophole because it is implied that a witch who hasn't activated their gene yet is still considered a human. This means that maybe Kol and Freya were the only two who tapped into their magical gene whereas the others never explored this side of themselves. This makes a bit more sense because Klaus' daughter, Hope, ends up being a very powerful witch who is able to perform huge spells when she is just a child.
19/25 Kol & Davina Are Defeated
Like we said before, a lot of The Originals involves witches and ancestors of these witches who like to get involved in everyones business. Davina is one of the most powerful witches in the quarter, even once the harvest girl ritual is completed. She has so much power stored inside her body that she sometimes doesn't even know what to do with it. She is a powerful ally to Marcel because he saved her from the ritual but that doesn't mean that she is afraid of taking anyone who crosses her out. Kol is also an extremely powerful witch, he did learn from the original witch herself! When his mother brings him back she brings him back in a powerful witch's body.
Together they should be unstoppable yet they find themselves getting beat by other magical beings more often then less.
They are one of the most powerful duos in the entire series with their combined abilities. Kara Nguyen was an elder of the ninth ward who hated Davina because she was a vampire sympathizer. She attempted to cures Davina but failed and Davina sent Hayley to end her as revenge. She was later seen as an ancestral spirit and was trying to get revenge on Davina. She was successful after two attempts she was successful in shredding Davina's spirit, a fate worse then the end.
18/25 How The Originals Were Made
In The Vampire Diaries and The Originals universe becoming a vampire is a lot more complicated then just being bit by one. The whole process is about three steps in total. The first step being you must ingest vampire blood and the second being you have to perish with this vampire blood in your system. Once you wake up after being ended, you have to feed in order to complete the transition. If you fail to feed then your body will decompose in about 24 hours and you will perish, for good this time.
When Klaus and his siblings were created they were created a bit different, seeing as there was no one like them before. At one point in the series, Davina states that the originals were created when they perished with vampire blood in their system. This makes sense in the grand scheme of things, but if you think closely it is not possible. There were no vampires before them, they were the Originals, for goodness sake, so how did they perish with vampire blood in their system? Their creation was a lot more complicated and involved a lot of magic and a very powerful spell. Esther never wanted to experience losing another child after their son Henrik was ended so she created a way that would keep them alive forever, literally.
17/25 Vincent Left New Orleans But Never Lost His Connection
The witches place a lot of importance on their ancestors and the power that they hold. The ancestors is where most of their power derives and if they leave New Orleans the witches are supposed to lose their connection to both their powers as well as the ancestors as a whole. Vincent was one of the most powerful witches on the show and in the quarter. He has helped the Mikaelsons out of their most dire situations and has much as he hates it he is always there to lend a helping hand, especially when children or innocent people are involved.
In the newest season, he is in charge of the witches as a whole, but at one point in the show he left New Orleans.
Going along with The Originals main storyline, he should have lost his connection to the ancestors along with his powers but neither of these things happened. He was still able to perform magic as well as contact the ancestors. The Originals writers seem to have a hard time staying on track with their own storylines and keeping with their history. This is the main reason that there are so many inconsistencies in the show.
16/25 The Mystic Falls Entrance
Mystic Falls is the main setting for pretty much the entire eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries. Mystic Falls is a pretty small town located in Virginia, but it has a surprising amount of supernatural residents. Klaus and his family end up there after he breaks his curse. Klaus is surprised by how much he likes the small town and before he finds out about Hayley being pregnant, he decides to stay a while. Once he finds out that he is going to be a father, he decides to move to New Orleans and rebuild his life and his family's legacy there.
However, Mystic Falls is still seen in a couple of different episodes, especially the newer season because it is where Hope attends school. The welcome sign to Mystic Falls is seen a lot in The Vampire Diaries and at one point in the show as far as any supernatural being can go. However, when the welcome sign is seen in The Originals it is completely different. The sign even has a different "established year" for the small town. This left a ton of viewers scratching their heads and wondering when Mystic Falls was really founded. This may not seem like a big idea, but if you watched both of the shows then you probably know that dates and history are very important to both shows and talked about a whole lot.
15/25 Season Five's Time Jump
It makes a ton of sense that the writers decided to add a pretty large time jump in the fifth season, especially because it was the last season of the show. It allows you to get a better idea of where all of the characters will be once the show ends. Viewers get to see Hope attending the Salvatore Boarding school and how all of her family is doing since the spell was performed that split them apart forever. The time jump is supposed to be exactly seven years from where the fourth season left off, but it doesn't make too much sense if you pay close attention. When the fourth season came to a close, it was around May 2019 in New Orleans, but when the fifth season opened up the factions were getting ready to celebrate Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras is typically celebrated between February or March, so the time jump is off by a couple of months.
This is nothing major and was probably not noticed by those who aren't hardcore fans of the show, but it is still an inconsistency in their storyline. This leads to the next inconsistency as well, so it does play a little bit of a larger role.
14/25 Hope's Age Is Off
Hope is the daughter of the most powerful supernatural being in the entire world. Her father is Klaus, the original hybrid and her mother is a pretty powerful hybrid herself. She inherits a lot of things from both her mother and father, including magical witch powers and the ability to make hybrids at will. When the fourth season leaves off Hope is just a little seven year old girl who wants to live a normal life and likes to color and paint. When the show picks up in the fifth season there is supposed to be a seven year time jump but Hope's age is off by one year. At one point in the beginning of the season Freya states that Hope is fifteen years old but she is only supposed to be fourteen years old.
Despite being engulfed in the supernatural world, Hope is sort of a normal teenager.
She has a crush on the cute boy from her school and thinks that everything that her mother says is wrong. She is also very angry at her father because she feels abandoned by him. Hope understands that he can't be near her but she wishes that he would have at least called or wrote to her to find out how she is.
13/25 Age Doesn't Seem To Matter
In both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals the general rule is that age equals power. The older the vampire, the stronger it is. If that is the case, then Klaus and his siblings should be the most powerful vampires in the supernatural world because they are the oldest vampires ever. There are no vampires that are older then them. However, this does not seem to be the case as they are often overpowered by younger vampires, including Marcel. At one point in the series, Elijah's sire line seems to be intent on ending the other sire lines so that they can reign supreme. When Elijah tries to stop them, they come pretty close to taking out him and his family. Not to mention, Marcel's many successful attempts to take out different members of the original family.
Even on The Vampire Diaries, those vampires such as Elena and the Salvatore brothers were able to take down Elijah and Rebekah a number of times, they even ended Kol and Finn! None of these defeats make any sense, because the originals should be more powerful then any vampire that comes their way. Of course, it wouldn't make for a very interesting show if the originals were able to easily defeat every enemy that came that way, this is probably the reason that the writers go against their own theories.
12/25 Bound To Life By The White Oak Tree?
The origin of the Mikaelson family and how they came to be immortals is discussed a lot on both The Vampire DiariesandThe Originals. The siblings are supposedly bound to life by the white oak tree that grew near where they were settled as humans. The wood from this tree was the only weapon that could end the originals, apart from Klaus of course, but they burned it down before anyone could hurt them.
Now if you go along with the idea that they are bound to life by this special tree, then when the tree was burned, shouldn't they have perished with it?
Obviously, there is something else that bounds them to life aside from this tree because the tree is gone and they are still alive! It turns out that not all of the white oak was destroyed and there is still a little bit floating around. Klaus keeps some of the ash from the tree in case his siblings do something that he doesn't like and he drives a dagger coated with it through their heart for however long he feels like it. He has been known to keep them daggered for quite a long time before waking them up from their slumber.
11/25 Are They Really 'The Originals' If Silas exists?
When Silas was introduced into the franchise everyone was really confused and he threw a wrench into The Originals' entire story line. The Mikaelson siblings were thought to be the first and oldest vampires in history for pretty much the entire series but when Silas came along this was all brought into question. Silas claimed that he was turned into an immortal way before the Mikaelson siblings, and he too drank blood in order to survive. So doesn't this make Silas the first vampire, even if he doesn't go by the name "vampire"?
This had a lot of people questioning whether or not the writers thought this storyline through.
Silas ended up messing a ton of stuff up for the vampires and humans of Mystic Falls before he was finally able to achieve his longtime goal, to pass and be at peace. He was turned immortal by his crazy ex who was jealous of his new lady love. Silas perished pretty soon after he was introduced, so there was not too much time for the characters to question who truly was the "original vampire," but it is generally accepted that Klaus and his siblings are the first vampires to ever have been created.
10/25 The Originals Being Overpowered By Other Vampires
When the original vampires are first introduced into The Vampire Diaries franchise, everyone was terrified of them, especially Klaus. They are supposed to be everyone's worst enemy. The original vampires are not like regular vampires. They are stronger, faster, and a whole lot older. The original vampires also have abilities that other vampires do not, like how they are able to compel other vampires. Regular vampires are only able to compel humans. Original vampires can also not be ended in the same ways that regular vampires can; well, they can, but don't worry, they will be back!
With all of this being said, there is no reason that regular vampires should be any match for the original vampires. However, almost all of the Mikaelson family enemies are regular vampires and they are usually able to get at least one leg up on them. They may never actually end the originals, but they sure get close a couple of times. If no vampires were able to come close to defeating the originals, then the show would be a bit pointless and frankly boring, but that doesn't mean that the writers can't make the show a bit more realistic and interesting.
9/25 The Other Side
In The Vampire Diaries, one of the main storylines of an entire season was "the other side" collapsing and taking everything over there down with it. The reason for this collapse was because of the anchor being destroyed, therefore there was nothing holding it down anymore. Kol was seen being taken away into the nothingness when the other side went down but when he was seen on The Originals again he seemed to be intact in one piece. On The Originals, plenty of supernatural beings have perished but no one seems to be experiencing anything like the other side that is in The Vampire Diaries.
This is strange, considering they are meant to be in the same universe and even share the same time jumps.
The "other side" in The Originals seems to be run by witches more or less, and is a lot less scary. As far as the characters on The Vampire Diaries are concerned, once the other side is gone, if any supernatural being is ended, they are thrust into a dark whole of nothingness. For some of the supernatural who were ended on The Originals, their fate after passing is unknown. An example of this would be Cami.
8/25 Freya's Weapon To End Marcel
At one point in the show Marcel is turned into an "original," more or less. He is the one that the prophecy has warned of as he now has the power to end all of the originals. He wants revenge for what they did to Davina as he saw her as a daughter. He is almost complete with destroying the whole family, but is stopped by Freya. Freya, as always, comes to the rescue and creates a weapon that she believes will end Marcel and finally put an end to his reign. Marcel now has all of the power of an original and can even turn at will like Klaus, making him a hybrid.
Even though he is basically considered an original, the weapon that Freya created to destroy him does not include white oak. White oak is supposed to be the only thing that can end an original yet it seems there is something else that can end Marcel. Freya is unsuccessful with ending Marcel, and as a result her brother is imprisoned by him with Papa Tunde's blade for five years. Hayley is eventually able to bring the entire family back together, but they make peace with Marcel and agree to leave New Orleans for good... or so they thought.
7/25 Marcel's Venom Is Dangerous To The Originals
For most of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals the one thing that truly protects the originals from being ended is the unavailability of white oak as this is the one weapon that can take most of them out. That is until Marcel is created, the venom from his fangs is said to be strong enough to end any original, even Klaus. This does not even make a lick of sense as the Originals have attacked witches, vampires, werewolves, and humans alike for centuries, so if there was a serum that could be created to finally end off the entire family, wouldn't a witch have thought about it already?
Also, how can no one have figured out that there is something that can end the most powerful vampires in the entire world?
In all actuality, this storyline made no sense at all, but it added a bit more flair to the series knowing that Marcel had the power and drive to take out the entire original family if he felt like it. But of course, Freya saved the day once again by creating a cure for this deadly venom in the case that her brothers or sister were ever bitten by him.
6/25 Davina Being Resurrected
Davina was an interesting character on the show because she was young but very powerful and determined. She wanted no part of her history and to ever have to be referred to as a "harvest girl" again. Once she was free from all of the ancestors, she started to do what she wanted for the first time ever. All of this power and freedom got to her head a little bit and soon she was doing things that shocked everyone, even Marcel. She sent Hayley after a witch who was trying to curse her for sympathizing with vampires. This witch was obviously not very happy with her and set out for revenge, even after she was ended.
This witch vowed revenge and she got just that when she literally shredded Davina's soul, sentencing her to a punishment worse then the end. Having your soul shredded and basically your entire being destroyed sounds like something that you cannot come back from, but Davina seems to have defied all odds. In the newest season, Kol was able to resurrect her, with the help of his niece, and the two drove off into the sunlight happy as can be! This is one of the shows more farfetched story lines by far.
